Tilting in Black and White: Photographs from Robert Mellin's archives

"I started fieldwork to document Tilting's vernacular architecture in May of 1987. I rented an old house that once belonged to Ed McGrath, just opposite the church. Soon after I arrived we were able to purchase an old house on the other side of the harbour that once belonged to Harold Dwyer. That year in addition to repairing the house and interviewing people, I took hundreds of black and white photographs of houses, outbuildings, and furniture in Tilting, and a few photographs in the resettled community of Cape Cove on the south coast of Fogo Island...The photos remind me of how much has changed in the past 47 or so years.."  ~ from the introduction
